Is this medical advice?
No. SafeByte is a shopping aide, not a medical device. Our database draws from FDA, FARE, KFA, and EFSA published guidance, but cross-contamination is real and labels change. Always verify the actual product label and contact the manufacturer for severe allergies.
Where do the 800+ aliases come from?
Every alias is sourced and cited: FDA FALCPA regulations, FARE's published "hidden names" lists, KFA/AAFA medical-reviewed guides, and EFSA for EU/Canada-recognized allergens like mollusk and mustard. Each entry shows you which agency named it.
What if my child has a severe / anaphylactic allergy?
SafeByte flags severity-aware behavior. For severe or anaphylactic users, every cart requires explicit "YES" confirmation before anything is considered placed. We never silently let through a may-contain warning. We err toward over-warning every time.
Can I shop for someone else with different allergies?
Yes. Tell SafeByte "this cart is for my mother-in-law, she's allergic to shellfish and tree nuts." We use her allergens for that cart only and never overwrite your profile — unless you ask us to save them.
What happens to ingredients I send that aren't in your database?
Two things. First, we run them through a real-time AI classifier that errs toward false positives — better safe than missed. Second, we log them for human review so we can add them to the verified database with a citation. Your queries make it stronger for the next person.
Do you sell my data or take affiliate commissions?
No to both. SafeByte makes money one way: a $8.99/mo subscription. We never tilt picks toward retailers that pay more, because that conflict would compromise the trust that makes this work. Your profile data is never shared.
Which retailers do you support?
Walmart at launch (best public ingredient API). HEB, Target, Amazon, Sprouts, and Whole Foods are on the roadmap. If you want a specific retailer, reply to any SafeByte message and let us know.
